Severe Weather Hits Constanza, Jarabacoa, and La Vega: Landslides, Flooding, and Infrastructure Damage Reported
Civil Defense warns of disruptions to daily life and urges caution on key roads.
CONSTANZA. — According to statements from Jacqueline Polonia, a Civil Defense volunteer and director for the province of La Vega, serious incidents have been reported in Constanza, Jarabacoa, and the urban center of La Vega due to the recent heavy rains associated with a lingering trough system.
Polonia noted that daily life has been severely disrupted in Constanza and Jarabacoa, where landslides, damaged homes, and road blockages have occurred. In La Vega’s main urban center, several rivers have overflowed, occasionally halting traffic.

In Constanza, Polonia reported the collapse of a wall at a local auto repair shop and structural cracks in approximately 10 homes due to persistent rainfall. Significant landslides have occurred in high-risk zones within the city. Several affected homes and the collapsed wall are located in El Edén and Los Laureles communities. The terrain in these areas, worsened by fallen trees and blocked paths, has made access difficult, requiring the deployment of specialized response teams to assist residents.
Jarabacoa: Road Warnings Issued
In Jarabacoa, landslides have been reported along the main road connecting the town to La Vega, particularly in the communities of Manabao, El Cuchillito, Los Cerditos, and El Puerto. The Civil Defense has issued a strong advisory urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when traveling through these areas due to unstable ground conditions.
La Vega: Flooded Rivers and Road Hazards
In the city of La Vega, Polonia reported several “high-risk” situations. Notably, the Burende River, along with rivers in Los Dajaos and Río de La Piedra, have overflowed their banks. In some cases, water levels have risen above bridge decks, temporarily halting traffic—particularly in areas near the Duarte Highway.
Additionally, in central La Vega, a sinkhole has opened on José Horacio Street (also known as Avenida de los Framboyanes), near Pedro A. Rivera Avenue. The hole, caused by rain-induced erosion, has drawn a crowd of curious onlookers seeking information and speculating about its cause.
