Spain reaffirms strong ties with Dominican Republic
Madrid.- Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares reaffirmed strong diplomatic ties with the Dominican Republic, describing the two nations as “sister countries” during a meeting in Madrid with Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez. Albares shared a message of unity on social media, emphasizing the deep human, cultural, and economic bonds between the two countries.
He highlighted their shared commitment to democracy, multilateral cooperation, and membership in the Ibero-American Community. The statement marks a reaffirmation of relations following a diplomatic rift in March, when the Dominican government objected to a controversial video released by Spain’s Popular Party (PP).
The video, created with AI, portrayed Dominican locations in a negative light, linking them to a political scandal. In response to the backlash, the PP withdrew the video and issued an apology, easing tensions between the two nations.
