What’s happening to the climate in the Dominican Republic? A look back at 135 years of heat

Every June 21, meteorologists from around the world unite to raise awareness about global warming.

Santo Domingo.- On this occasion, meteorological analyst Jean Suriel has shared a concerning climate snapshot of the Dominican Republic, based on the international tool #ShowYourStripes, which visualizes the rise in temperatures since 1850.

According to Suriel, data for the country from 1888 to 2024 show an alarming pattern: until 1980, temperatures remained relatively cool (represented by blue stripes).

However, subtle changes began to be recorded starting in 1985, which intensified between 2000 and 2005, with increasingly hot summers.

The critical point came in 2015, when the heat began to intensify steadily, reaching its peak in 2024, the hottest year on record in the country’s history. ” These are alarming data that we must be aware of in order to become aware of what is happening on planet Earth,” Suriel warned.

This warning follows recent reports of extreme heat waves in the country, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in several regions.
