U.S. Embassy warns citizens against using motorcycle taxis in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic has released a set of transportation safety recommendations for its citizens, aiming to help ensure a secure and trouble-free stay in the country.

In an official statement, the embassy strongly discouraged the use of motoconchos—informal motorcycle taxis—citing safety concerns due to drivers’ frequent disregard for traffic laws and helmet use. Instead, travelers are advised to use authorized, clearly marked taxis with official credentials and to agree on fares in advance to avoid overcharging.

The embassy also confirmed that ride-hailing apps like Uber operate in cities such as Santo Domingo and Santiago. Passengers are urged to verify the driver’s name and vehicle license plate before beginning their trip.

For those renting cars to explore independently, the embassy considers it a good option but advises full insurance coverage and cautions against nighttime driving due to poor road lighting and unpredictable traffic behavior.

In emergencies, U.S. citizens can reach the Tourist Police (Politur) by calling 809-222-2026 or via WhatsApp at +1-809-520-8665. The embassy concluded with a reminder: “A little planning can save a lot of trouble,” encouraging visitors to stay informed and take basic precautions during their stay.

Avoid mototaxis, the life you save may be your own. When visiting it is advised to acquire medical insurance if you home policy does not provide overseas coverage.

Of course. It’s a lot cheaper to take that instead of actual taxis and ride-share apps, but have a higher risk of dying because people are bad drivers.

Dominicans are born on those motos. They drive them better than cars. I’d rather be on there than in a car in the city.
