Push for temporary work permits for foreign workers gains support

Santo Domingo.- Luis Sabater, the newly sworn-in president of the Dominican Concrete Institute (Indocon), stated that issuing temporary work permits to foreign laborers will not lead to an increase in the undocumented population, as most of these workers are already residing in the country.

Sabater highlighted the construction sector’s two main challenges: a shortage of labor and rising interest rates. He emphasized the importance of formalizing the status of existing foreign workers—many of whom are already recognized migrants—by implementing a structured temporary permit program, which he clarified should not be viewed as “regularization” due to potential misunderstandings.

Accompanied by the Indocon board of directors, Sabater urged business leaders to join forces in supporting the construction industry as a key driver of the Dominican economy, while also promoting more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. He stressed the need for companies to commit to ensuring that temporary workers return home after their contracts end.
