Fatal stabbing in Naco: one dead, five injured in apartment attack

Santo Domingo.- A tragic knife attack in a residential building in Naco, National District, left one woman dead and five others injured on Wednesday. The victim, 70-year-old Yolanda Handal Abugabil, was fatally wounded by Jean Andrés Pumarol Fernández, who was later apprehended by authorities, according to National Police spokesperson Diego Pesqueira.

Among the injured were the attacker’s father, 62-year-old golfer Guillermo Pumarol; neighbor Francisco Texano, 68; caretaker Teresa Fabián Heredia; Griselda Ozuna, 48; and Victoria Heredia, 36. The attack occurred around 4:00 p.m. in apartment 5AC of the Naco IV Dorado condominium, where the suspect reportedly moved between floors, knocking on doors and stabbing victims at random. Police said the assailant was carrying two knives.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and both the National Police and Public Ministry are conducting investigations and interviews to determine the circumstances.

In a show of support, First Lady Raquel Arbaje visited the scene of the incident. The victim, Yolanda Handal Abugabil, was the sister of Nancy Handal de Mejía, general coordinator of the Office of the First Lady.
