Sentence of RD$200,000 imposed on U.S. man who killed a dog by throwing it from a tower.

Based on evidence provided by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, a court imposed a financial guarantee of RD$200,000 per contract, a ban on leaving the country, and periodic reporting on the 30th of each month on the man who killed a dog by throwing it from an apartment building in the capital.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office had requested preventive detention for Michael Williams, a U.S. citizen, accused of committing the crimes of animal cruelty and biocide in violation of the Animal Protection and Responsible Ownership Law (Law 248-12).

Judge Rigoberto Sena, of the Judicial Office of Permanent Attention Services of the National District, imposed the measures during the hearing in which prosecutors presented evidence with which they maintain that during the night of July 11, the accused threw a live dog from the 11th floor of the Villa Palmeras XXII Tower, in the Bella Vista sector, of the National District.

The vehicle sustained visible damage, as indicated by images and videos collected during the investigation.

Several neighbors witnessed the unfortunate incident. As part of the ongoing prosecution for violations of the law mentioned above, the defendant was arrested during an investigation conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the National Liaison for Animal Protection and the National District Prosecutor’s Office, with support from the Animal Protection Department of the National Police.

There are many calls from the public to throw Michael Williams from the 11th floor of the Villa Palmeras XXII Tower. Such animal abusers have been found to commit violent crimes against humans as well.
