Guyana and Dominican Republic sign agreement to cultivate cocoa and coffee

Santo Domingo.- The governments of Guyana and the Dominican Republic signed an agreement on Tuesday to launch large-scale cocoa and coffee farming in Region One (Barima-Waini), aiming to enhance economic diversification, rural livelihoods, and regional trade.

The initiative will establish about 200 acres of plantations and promote sustainable agriculture through joint efforts in cultivation, processing, marketing, and research. At full capacity, the project is expected to yield around 8,000 metric tons of cocoa and benefit approximately 3,000 people through direct and indirect job creation.

El acuerdo subraya la importancia de la agricultura sostenible y la cooperación técnica.

Rooted in President Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s vision for revitalizing agriculture in Region One, the agreement builds on his 2024 announcement of plans for a 4,000-hectare coffee plantation and the distribution of thousands of cocoa plants to restore the region’s status as a key coffee-producing area.
