Fatal crash near Najayo entrance kills five, injures dozens
San Cristóbal, DR.- A highway overturned early Friday near the entrance to Najayo, claiming at least five lives and leaving many motorcyclists injured, authorities confirmed. The accident occurred at kilometer 5 on the 6 de Noviembre Highway, where a heavy trailer lost control and flipped into a group of waiting riders.
Emergency crews from the General Directorate of Land Traffic (Digesett) arrived swiftly to tend to victims and clear the scene. Multiple motorcyclists suffered serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Digesett urged motorists to steer clear of the stretch and follow detours while officers work to restore normal traffic flow.
In a social-media advisory, Digesett warned: “Drivers, please stay alert on the 6 de Noviembre Highway near La Bomba del 5, Najayo Arriba. Our agents are on site managing the aftermath of a major crash.” A video posted by the agency shows traffic backed up for miles as responders remove debris and assist the wounded.
The deadly wreck underscores ongoing safety concerns on Dominican highways, where heavy vehicles and motorcycles share narrow lanes without adequate separation. As investigators piece together what led to the trailer’s rollover, calls are growing for stricter enforcement of load limits and improved roadside infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
