Chinese Embassy rejects Pelegrín Castillo’s imperialism allegations
Santo Domingo.- The Chinese Embassy in the Dominican Republic, through Ambassador Chen Luning, firmly rejected recent statements made by Pelegrín Castillo, vice president of the National Progressive Force (FNP), who accused China of imperialist ambitions. The embassy labeled Castillo’s remarks as “erratic, unfounded, and ideologically biased,” asserting they are detached from reality and unacceptable.
In a public statement, Ambassador Chen urged Castillo to move past Cold War-era thinking and avoid spreading misinformation or inciting division. He emphasized the need to act responsibly and focus on strengthening the growing ties between China and the Dominican Republic, which have been built on mutual respect, the one-China principle, and cooperative development since diplomatic relations began over seven years ago.
The embassy highlighted China’s tangible contributions to Dominican society, including millions of donated COVID-19 vaccines, ambulances to boost emergency services, and agricultural support to enhance rice production and food security. With bilateral trade expected to surpass US$5 billion in 2024, China has become the Dominican Republic’s second-largest trading partner, supporting both imports and exports.
Ambassador Chen added that Castillo’s claims ignore the visible benefits of Sino-Dominican relations, which are increasingly appreciated by the Dominican population. He warned that such rhetoric contradicts the Dominican government’s policy of friendship with China and undermines the broader public’s interest in deepening cooperation. China, he concluded, promotes peaceful development without seeking geopolitical dominance or influence, basing its partnerships in Latin America on respect, equality, and mutual gain.

DR government still needs to address the growing trade deficit with China. How will this be mitigated in the coming years?
