Edeeste: Pirate connections in SPM cause losses exceeding RD$3.1 million

San Pedro de Macorís.– The Eastern Electricity Distribution Company (Edeeste) , in coordination with the Deputy Attorney General’s Office for the Electric System (Pgase) and the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE), carried out a broad operation against electrical fraud in the municipality of Consuelo, province of San Pedro de Macorís, where irregularities were detected that represent economic losses estimated at RD$ 3,109,916.88.

The inspection, which included six Pgase units and specialized technical personnel from Edeeste, focused on high-consumption commercial establishments. During the operation, multiple irregular connections were identified that, in addition to being illegal, compromise the safety and reliability of the electrical system.

Among the businesses reported for irregularities are: Cafeteria Col. Yudy, Melaza Flow Sport, Meloso The Vaper Store, Car Wash El Gallego Drinks and Lounge, Angeirys Closet – La Academia de la Moda, Super Colmado Zorrilla, Hotel Río Tinto, and Richqueza SRL Construction Materials.

According to the technical survey, these establishments recorded a combined actual consumption of 266,861 kWh, but only reported 19,623 kWh in their monthly billing, equivalent to RD$93,541.10, which demonstrates a significant gap between the energy used and the amount recorded in the billing system.

Edeeste and Pgase reaffirmed their commitment to combating electricity fraud to ensure a fairer, safer, and more efficient service. They announced that they will continue to carry out similar operations in other locations within the concession area to reduce losses and strengthen the sustainability of the national electricity system.

The distributor invites the public, the media, and authorities to actively join the fight against electricity fraud, with the goal of improving service quality and protecting the significant investments being made in the sector. This joint effort is key to ensuring a safer, more efficient, and sustainable electricity system for all.

Going to the source, just wondering how many of these illegal connections were made by employees of Edeeste in return for favors?
