Cotuí residents protest Barrick Pueblo Viejo mining expansion

Cotuí, DR.-  Dozens of people marched through the streets of Cotuí this Saturday to protest against the operations of Barrick Pueblo Viejo mining company and the government’s policies. Organized by the Cotuisano Unity and Development Bloc and supported by the Broad Front of Popular Struggle (FALPO) along with other social groups, the demonstrators carried banners and shouted slogans condemning the mining company’s expansion plans, which they say disregard the well-being of the Dominican people.

Community leaders criticized the government for failing to guarantee basic rights such as access to clean water, road repairs, and decent living conditions. They highlighted how rural communities near the mine suffer from water shortages, environmental pollution, and repression. The company’s proposal to build a new tailings plant to store mining waste has sparked widespread opposition from social, community, and environmental sectors due to fears of contamination and displacement.

Additionally, the resettlement program launched by Barrick Pueblo Viejo has drawn sharp criticism for lacking genuine dialogue, offering inadequate compensation, and failing to ensure proper living conditions for those relocated. Spokesperson Tereso Arias voiced strong rejection of the mining operation and its expansion, declaring, “We will not remain silent; we don’t want them to leave… we demand it,” as he marched with fellow leaders and citizens.
