Santo Domingo Metro expands capacity with new trains
Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader led the launch of the capacity expansion for Line 1 of the Santo Domingo Metro this Sunday, introducing four new six-car trains and inaugurating a new pedestrian interconnection corridor between Lines 1 and 2. Starting August 10, the expanded fleet can transport up to 17,000 passengers per hour, with projections to reach 22,000 by December, easing congestion during peak hours and improving overall travel experience.
To accommodate the longer trains, platforms at five elevated stations in Santo Domingo Norte were extended from 60 to 120 meters. The new trains will be added gradually according to demand, supporting the current daily ridership of over 380,000 passengers. The newly opened interconnection corridor at Juan Pablo Duarte Station features three tunnels that double pedestrian capacity, enhance passenger flow, and improve safety and comfort between the two metro lines.
The project, costing approximately USD 260 million, is funded by the Dominican government and the French Development Agency (AFD). The inauguration was attended by government officials, diplomats, AFD representatives, OPRET staff, and metro users.
