Tropical storm Erin could become 2025’s first hurricane
Santo Domingo.- Tropical Storm Erin has developed in the eastern Atlantic, just west of the Cape Verde Islands, becoming the fifth named storm of the season, the National Hurricane Center reported Monday. Forecasts indicate conditions are favorable for rapid strengthening, with the system potentially reaching hurricane status by Wednesday night and possibly major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) by Saturday.
While Erin remains far from land, its formation affects the Dominican Republic indirectly, as the country lies within the “main development region” for storms—an area between Africa and the Caribbean where cyclones commonly form before moving westward.
Currently, no alerts have been issued for Dominican territory. However, meteorologists advise the public to remain attentive, given the possibility of changes in the storm’s path and intensity over the coming days.
