Operation Octopus: court acquits Magalys Medina and Fernando Rosa

Santo Domingo.- Deputy Attorney General Wilson Camacho, head of the General Prosecution Directorate, criticized the exoneration of Fernando Rosa and Magalys Medina Sánchez, sister of former President Danilo Medina, in the Operation Octopus case. Camacho described the ruling as a “shadow” over a case that the court itself recognized as involving “full, absolute, and profound” corruption.
Camacho argued that the Second Collegiate Court of the National District misjudged the evidence against Rosa and Medina, stating that the acquittals contradicted the proven charges of bribery, fraud against the state, criminal association, and forgery. While the court did convict Juan Alexis Medina Sánchez, who was sentenced to seven years in prison, and upheld asset seizures and agreements with former OISOE director Víctor Matías Encarnación Montero, Camacho emphasized that justice cannot be partial.
Judges Claribel Nivar, Yissell Soto Peña, and Clara Sobeyda Castillo acknowledged the deep institutional corruption revealed in the case, yet acquitted Rosa and Medina, prompting public outrage. Camacho confirmed that the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PEPCA) will appeal the ruling to ensure that both defendants face the legal consequences supported by the evidence.
