Relief agencies establish nearly 800 shelters after Hurricane Erin

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Civil Defense announced this Saturday that, in coordination with the Emergency Operations Center (COE), it has launched a comprehensive prevention plan to address the effects of Hurricane Erin, which currently remains a powerful Category 5 storm.

As part of the measures adopted, 779 shelters have been set up in eight provinces along the Atlantic coast, with the capacity to accommodate 181,000 people in the event of mass evacuations. In addition, vessels have been prepositioned in alert areas to ensure a rapid response to any emergency.

Civil Defense also announced the activation of the red flag on beaches and resorts in the provinces at risk, implying a temporary ban on water activities due to strong waves and dangerous sea conditions.

The agency reiterated its ongoing monitoring of the hurricane’s development and urged the public to follow official recommendations to protect lives and property. The COE maintains a green alert for several provinces, including the National District, due to the possibility of heavy rains, gusty winds, and abnormal waves.
