Dominican Republic launches 511 for highway emergencies
Santo Domingo.- The RD Vial Trust announced the launch of 511, a new emergency number for drivers to report incidents on the country’s main highways. The number replaces 829-688-1000 as the official channel of the Integrated Roadside Assistance Service, operated by the Military and Police Commission (COMIPOL). With this change, motorists will have faster and easier access to immediate support in cases of breakdowns, accidents, or other risks on the national road network.
The implementation of 511 places the Dominican Republic within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), aligning it with international standards already used in the United States and Canada. Authorities highlighted that the measure not only modernizes the driver experience but also strengthens road safety by improving accessibility and response times. The service is being reinforced with the gradual addition of more than 200 new mobile assistance units.
The initiative, developed in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) and authorized by INDOTEL, consolidates the country’s commitment to accident prevention and to offering drivers a reliable, internationally recognized support system.

The biggest hazard in the nation highway system IS the mobile assistance units -that travel at 50kph. Anything moving at a drastically different speed than the flow of traffic is a hazard. The new 511 number will be helpful for reporting their existence.
