Abinader announces Santo Domingo Monorail

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced the construction of the Santo Domingo Monorail, a project that will be part of the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System (SIT-SD). The initiative, managed by FITRAM, will be developed in three phases, starting with a 10.5-kilometer section that will include 12 stations, stretching from Charles de Gaulle Avenue in Santo Domingo Este to the Olympic Center in the National District. This first stage will directly connect with Metro Lines 1 and 2.

The elevated system will run along key arteries such as Las Américas Highway and 27 de Febrero Avenue, serving an estimated 306,000 passengers daily. Initial operations will feature 4-car trains with a capacity of 562 passengers each, running every 90 seconds. The system is designed to expand to 6-car trains, capable of transporting up to 34,160 passengers per hour in each direction, providing a faster and more efficient alternative to current urban mobility options.

Abinader highlighted that the elevated monorail will reduce costs by about 35% compared to underground systems while increasing coverage in areas such as Los Frailes, Alma Rosa, Villa Duarte, San Carlos, Ciudad Colonial, Villa Juana, and downtown neighborhoods like Naco, Esperilla, and Evaristo Morales. The project’s phases include: Phase 1 from the Olympic Center to the Rey Juan Carlos Bridge; Phase 2 extending to Pintura on Av. 27 de Febrero; and Phase 3 reaching the 27 de Febrero Extension to connect with Metro Line 2 in Los Alcarrizos. The president emphasized that the system will improve quality of life and benefit more than one million residents of Greater Santo Domingo.
