Abinader calls for stronger global response to Haiti’s collapse at UN

New York.- President Luis Abinader addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, urging immediate international action to address Haiti’s deepening crisis, which he described as an unprecedented human tragedy marked by violence, institutional collapse, and gang control. He emphasized that only coherent, sustained global efforts can restore security and enable Haitians to reach a democratic, sovereign agreement. Abinader reiterated that criminal groups, designated as terrorist organizations by both the Dominican Republic and the U.S., cannot be part of any negotiations.

The Dominican leader warned that the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti has so far failed due to insufficient personnel, funding, and structure. He backed a resolution by Panama and the United States calling for a reinforced mission under UN command, stressing the urgency of its approval before the mandate expires on October 2. More broadly, Abinader called for the revitalization of the UN and multilateralism, warning that without reform, the organization risks irrelevance at a time when global conflicts and financial constraints demand stronger cooperation.

Beyond Haiti, Abinader pressed for reforms in the global financial system to better serve developing nations, highlighting the need for concessional financing, debt relief, and greater cooperation. He also pointed to Dominican achievements in poverty reduction and food security, while calling for climate justice for vulnerable states facing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Concluding, Abinader urged collective global action: “May peace not be a wish, but a decision of all. That is our cry. That is our dream. That must be our common pact.”
