Government to introduce law turning sargassum into economic opportunity
Origin by Ocean starts exporting sargassum from the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican government announced plans to introduce a package of legislative initiatives to the National Congress aimed at modernizing the economy and promoting sustainable development, as part of the RD 2036 Meta Plan.
Among the 14 proposed laws, one of the most significant is the Law for the Protection of Tourist Areas from Sargassum, which seeks to establish a legal framework for the collection, treatment, and economic use of the seaweed. The proposal was presented by Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza during a meeting with senators to outline the plan’s main pillars.
The bill would classify sargassum as special management waste, setting regulations for its sustainable handling and encouraging private sector participation in its reuse and conversion into valuable products. The initiative aims to mitigate the environmental and economic impact of the recurring seaweed influx on Dominican beaches and coastal communities, while transforming the challenge into an opportunity for innovation and green development.
