New cases of malaria, dengue fever, and other diseases reported
Santo Domingo – The Ministry of Public Health reiterated this Thursday that there are still no reported cases of cholera in the Dominican Republic, while reminding the public that measures have been reinforced at the border and other points of entry into the country.
In issue 42 of the epidemiological bulletin, the Ministry of Public Health specified that, through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE), monitoring continues to ensure timely notification of this and other notifiable diseases.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining preventive measures to avoid cholera, such as frequent handwashing, drinking purified water, and eating safe food.
The Ministry of Health, as the governing body, continues to develop actions that strengthen response capabilities, which translates into better preparedness of the country
for health events.
During the past year, 2024 to date, a total of 15 cases of cholera have been reported and confirmed in the country, representing a 100% reduction from the previous week, when 0 cases were reported.
Epidemiological Bulletin SE-42
The Epidemiology Directorate, through its bulletin, reports 4 cases of malaria and a cumulative total of 779 confirmed cases to date, with no reported deaths from the disease and an incidence of 8.97 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In the case of leptospirosis, there are no reported cases this week, while the cumulative total is 94 to date.
One case of dengue was confirmed this week, bringing the cumulative total to 240 confirmed cases to date. By week 42 last year, a total of 1,256 cases had been confirmed, representing an 81 percent reduction.
Regarding respiratory diseases, DIEPI indicates that during the last four epidemiological weeks, circulation of respiratory syncytial virus has been observed, along with other viruses such as adenovirus, influenza B Victoria, and SARS-CoV-2.
Maternal and infant deaths
Epidemiological Bulletin 42 reports four maternal deaths of Dominican women. The cumulative total to date is 133. At this time last year, the cumulative total was 146.
There were 26 infant deaths recorded this year, bringing the total to 1,451. This figure represents a decrease, as 1,827 deaths were reported by the same date in 2024.
