Dominican power system restored after nationwide blackout

Santo Domingo.- Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos announced that as of 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, all power generation plants in the Dominican Republic were back online and the national transmission system was operating at full capacity, supplying 96% of the country’s electricity demand.

In an official statement, Santos confirmed that the electrical network was functioning normally and that service had been fully stabilized across the country. He also reported that the Failure Committee would meet at 10:00 a.m. to investigate the technical causes of the blackout, which originated at a substation in San Pedro de Macorís.

Following the outage, the electricity sector’s leadership — including ETED Administrator Martín Robles, CUED President Celso Marranzini, CNE Executive Director Edward Veras, Electricity Superintendent Andrés Astacio, and Vice Minister of Energy Alfonso Rodríguez — remained in continuous coordination from ETED’s Operations Center.

Minister Santos highlighted that President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña were in constant communication with the control center, closely monitoring the recovery process. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to energy security and the reliability of the national system, emphasizing the coordinated efforts of all institutions involved in restoring power and maintaining stability.

It should not have happened, but it did. The country needs more power storage facilities to stabilize the grid.

It is a shame that in modern times and with the millions of tourists that visit the DR yearly, there is still power blackout happening in DR every day for hours. All these people in charge of the power company should be fired for thier incompetence.
