Nearly three million Dominicans live outside the Dominican Republic. Where are they?
Nearly three million Dominicans have put down roots outside the island. Although most live in the United States and Spain, the Dominican diaspora is scattered worldwide, with a significant presence across the Americas and Europe.
The Institute of Dominicans Abroad (Index) reported that 2,874,124 Dominicans reside abroad, according to the 2024 Sociodemographic Registry Report of Dominicans Abroad.
The figure represents an increase of 27,408 Dominicans compared to the previous year’s report, equivalent to almost 1% more.
The register, updated until December 2024, incorporates data from 119 demarcations —95 sovereign states and 24 dependent territories—and expands its coverage to include countries such as Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.
The Dominican population abroad is primarily women, totaling 1,480,252 (53.5%), while men represent 1,284,882 (46.5%).
The youth segment is the largest: 37.2% are 25 years old or younger. In contrast, Dominicans aged 55 and over represent 19.1% of the total.
The Americas are home to the majority of the diaspora, with 2,580,924 Dominicans (89.9%). Europe hosts 10% of this population, equivalent to 288,515 people.
The United States remains the top destination, with 2,398,009 Dominicans. It is followed by Spain (201,162), Italy (29,791), Chile (22,836), Canada (22,125), the Netherlands (17,979), and Venezuela (11,399).
Other countries with a significant presence include Mexico (10,539), Panama (8,785), France (8,699), the United Kingdom (8,149), Argentina (7,817), and Germany (6,580).
The top 20 is completed by Switzerland (5,851), Costa Rica (4,905), Belgium (3,520), Austria (3,310), Haiti (2,377), Antigua and Barbuda (2,214), and Brazil (2,037).
In North America, Dominicans are also registered in territories such as Bermuda (132) and Greenland (1). In the Caribbean and Central America, Puerto Rico has 53,175 residents of Dominican origin, followed by the Virgin Islands (5,442), Curaçao (5,405), and Aruba (5,096).
In South America, French Guiana has 1,638.
Within the United States, New York remains the state with the highest concentration of Dominicans, with 848,560.
They are followed by New Jersey (380,143), Florida (312,604), Pennsylvania (191,094), Massachusetts (183,910), Rhode Island (68,937), Connecticut (65,132), Texas (44,807), North Carolina (39,464), and Georgia (34,806).
In Spain, the Dominican population is mainly distributed in Madrid (68,448) and Barcelona (40,353).
Other provinces with a notable presence include the Balearic Islands (5,744), Asturias (5,107), La Coruña (4,383), Zaragoza (4,177), Navarra (3,958), Valencia (3,685), Las Palmas (3,390), and Tarragona (3,313).
