Max Puig calls for reorientation of development models to confront climate change
Brazil.- Executive Vice President of the National Council for Climate Change and Carbon Market, Max Puig, emphasized that true development goes beyond economic growth — it must also ensure environmental protection, social equity, and long-term sustainability. Speaking at the Leaders Summit preceding the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), Puig underscored that sustainable progress requires placing climate resilience and social inclusion at the center of national policy.
Puig highlighted the Dominican Republic’s significant progress in meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets. The country had pledged in 2020 to cut emissions by 27% by 2030, with only 7% expected from domestic resources. However, by 2025 it had already achieved an 11% reduction using local investment alone, surpassing its midterm goals by more than 50%. He noted that this progress demonstrates the nation’s commitment to transforming climate promises into measurable action based on science and citizen well-being.
Looking ahead, Puig announced that the updated NDC 3.0 targets will soon be released, and they will be “even more ambitious” than those set in 2020. He reiterated that COP30 must be a “summit of truth and implementation,” where real action replaces rhetoric and the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C is reaffirmed.
