New York Governor Kathy Hochul receives Key to the City of Santiago
Santiago, DR.- The City Council of Santiago de los Caballeros awarded New York Governor Kathy Hochul the title of “Honorary Visitor” and presented her with the Key to the City during an official ceremony led by Mayor Ulises Rodríguez. In the same event, Dominican-American Congressman Adriano Espaillat was recognized as a “Distinguished Son” of Santiago for his contributions to public service and his ongoing support of the Dominican diaspora in the United States.
The recognitions, approved unanimously through resolutions 3472-25 and 3466-25, were introduced by Mayor Rodríguez and endorsed by Council President Cholo D’Oleo. During the ceremony, Rodríguez highlighted Santiago’s transformation through major infrastructure projects such as the cable car, monorail, and new hotel developments, describing Hochul’s visit as a symbol of the enduring connection between Santiago and the Dominican community in New York.
Governor Hochul expressed her gratitude for the distinction, noting the emotional significance of receiving her first key to a city outside the United States. She praised Santiago’s culture, history, and growth, affirming her commitment to strengthen collaboration and support initiatives like the preservation of the Yaque del Norte River. Congressman Espaillat also thanked city officials for the honor, recalling his long-standing efforts to reinforce the historic ties between Santiago and the Dominican diaspora in New York.
