US Embassy, Major League Baseball host kids’ camp in San Pedro
San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic.- To mark Black History Month, the United States the Embassy, Major League Baseball (MLB), the San Pedro de Macoris Baseball Association and the Robinson Cano Foundation on Saturday sponsored the first " Jackie Robinson Camp " with baseball clinics offered to children in the little leagues.
The activity held at Tetelo Vargas Stadiuum was headed by US Ambassador James Brewster; Seattle Mariners star Robinson Cano; MLB Dominican Republic Operations Director Rafael Pérez; San Pedro de Macoris Baseball Association President José Cano; San Pedro Governor Felix de los Santos, Mayor Ramon Echavarria, US diplomatic staff and professional players who live in San Pedro.
In a statement, the US Embassy said the camp featured eight simultaneous baseball clinics provided by the MLB and headed by major league players. “The players were rotated among children’s teams and thus could share with all children.”
Among baseball figures who took part in the activity figured Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Luis Mercedes, Eugenio Velez, Carlos Santana, Pedro Ciriaco, Eduardo Núñez, Juan Encarnacion and Pedro Florimón.
