Estero Hondo Marine Mammal Sanctuary opens Visitor Center

Puerto Plata.- The initiative to establish the Visitor Center at the “Estero Hondo Marine Mammal Sanctuary” is led by the National Fund for the Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA Fund). This collaborative project, backed by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MMARN), signifies a unique effort to preserve the diverse biodiversity of Estero Hondo.

With a design carefully crafted to harmonize with the natural surroundings, the Visitor Center incorporates a wetland for wastewater treatment, underscoring the shared dedication to environmental sustainability. A recent supervisory session, led by Engineer Judith Valdez and Tanja Lieuw, showcased significant progress and reinforced the commitment to conservation.

The Visitor Center promises visitors distinctive experiences, ranging from stargazing to camping, all set against the backdrop of the area’s natural beauty, including its characteristic white sand beach. Prioritizing safety, the center is equipped with an observation tower to ensure a secure environment.

The “Estero Hondo Marine Mammal Sanctuary” stands as a model illustrating how conservation and tourism can coexist harmoniously, offering opportunities to both enjoy and safeguard our invaluable biodiversity.
