Punta Cana, DR.- Strengthening tourism ties between Mexico and the Dominican Republic, Aeroméxico inaugurated a new daily direct route from Mexico City to Punta Cana on Thursday. This significant connection, active for the summer, links Punta Cana to 40 destinations across Mexico, enhancing access to the Caribbean’s premier resort destination.

The new route operates with Boeing 737 aircraft, offering approximately 10,000 monthly seats. These new flights effectively double Aeroméxico’s current capacity to the Dominican Republic, complementing the 10,000 seats already available on its Mexico City-Santo Domingo route. This expansion marks Aeroméxico’s 100th global station and highlights Punta Cana International Airport’s role as the Caribbean’s leading hub, handling 60% of the country’s air traffic.

A celebratory event at the airport underscored the strategic importance of this new connection. Dignitaries present included Giovanni Rainieri of Punta Cana Airport, Giancarlo Mulinelli of Aeroméxico, and Tammy Reynoso, MITUR’s Deputy Minister of Tourism Promotion. They emphasized the route’s timely arrival alongside a remarkable 33% surge in Mexican tourist arrivals to the Dominican Republic during the first four months of this year.

Deputy Minister Reynoso affirmed the new route represents “a firm step in our commitment to consolidate the Dominican Republic as an increasingly accessible and attractive destination for the Mexican market.” She expressed enthusiasm for fostering stronger bilateral ties through tourism, promising a blend of connectivity, hospitality, and memorable Caribbean experiences. Mulinelli also lauded Minister David Collado’s vision in promoting the Dominican Republic globally.

The inaugural Aeroméxico flight, AM461, arrived with 166 Mexican travelers (98% occupancy), welcomed by vibrant Dominican folk dance and music. On board was Carolina Pérez, Director of the DR Tourism Promotion Office in Mexico, who will conduct promotional events. This expansion further reinforces Punta Cana’s appeal for Mexican travelers, with over 115,000 visiting in 2024 and significant growth continuing into 2025, solidifying the commitment to enhanced tourism and air connectivity between both nations.
