The damage caused by sargassum in Boca Chica as an example

Diario Libre has published documented and factual information about the negative impact of sargassum on Boca Chica. The information from the newspaper, headed and edited by Aníbal de Castro, is very informative.

Sargassum is brutally hitting the coasts of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean in general. In Cancún and the Riviera Maya, the incidence is even higher than in our country.

Images from the Dominican Republic’s largest-circulation newspaper highlight the enormous damage this threatening seaweed is causing in the country: dead fish, foul odors, and empty beaches.

Unlike Punta Cana and Bávaro, where its presence is also massive, the invasive algae has not been addressed with the same intensity as hoteliers in our country’s top tourist destination.

The sargassum that is present on the shore of the coast that extends from Boca de Yuma to almost Miches is combated and cleaned every day, while that of Boca Chica, on the contrary, is not, according to the aforementioned media.

Diario Libre is not a general information outlet that opposes tourism; rather, it is the opposite. Its duty is to report on what’s happening in the sector precisely to address its problems.

And this sargassum problem is one of the five main ones in the country. President Luis Abinader himself made this clear in his recent statement before the United Nations. Technically, it is a very complex problem today.

Cancún and the Riviera Maya, our closest competitors, have been severely affected this summer by the abundance of this marine pest: tourism has dropped considerably as a result.

There are places where sargassum is nonexistent, specifically in BayahibePlaya Nueva Romana, areas in the northern region, and Pedernales. Hotel complexes will have to reinvent themselves to confront this gigantic enemy that scientists have yet to find a way to combat.
