Vatican City.- Pope Francis has expressed concerns about the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society’s “growing crisis of truth” in a message addressed to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He highlighted that AI’s ability to produce results almost indistinguishable from human output raises ethical and societal questions, particularly regarding its influence on public discourse and truth.
The pontiff emphasized the autonomous nature of AI, which allows it to learn, adapt, and make decisions unforeseen by its programmers. This capability, he warned, poses challenges related to ethical responsibility, human security, and the broader societal implications of its use. He underscored the importance of directing AI toward serving humanity and advancing justice, cautioning against its misuse to promote a “technocratic paradigm” that prioritizes technological efficiency over human dignity and brotherhood.
Francis also urged governments, businesses, and civil society to exercise vigilance in managing AI responsibly. He called for collaborative efforts at all levels to ensure AI serves the common good, emphasizing that true progress must improve lives universally rather than exacerbating inequalities or conflicts. Technological advancements, he concluded, should always uphold human dignity and work toward greater equity and justice.
it’s too late for nice words.
