Devon House in Jamaica lights up for Dominican Independence Anniversary

Kingston, Jamaica.- For the fourth consecutive year, Kingston’s historic Devon House was illuminated in the colors of the Dominican flag to commemorate the 181st anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence. This tradition, established by the Dominican diplomatic mission, has turned the landmark into a symbol of Dominican pride on Jamaican soil. The striking display has drawn attention from both residents and visitors, reinforcing the strong ties and mutual respect between the two nations.

Devon House, a 19th-century architectural gem once home to Jamaica’s first Black billionaire, George Stiebel, is a significant cultural landmark. Dominican Ambassador Angie Martínez expressed her pride in seeing the flag’s colors shine abroad, emphasizing that Dominican identity transcends borders and is carried in the heart of every Dominican.

To further celebrate independence, the Dominican Embassy in Jamaica is hosting a grand gala inspired by the Dominican carnival, featuring traditional masks, live music, and vibrant cultural performances. The event, expected to welcome over 600 distinguished guests—including Jamaican government officials, diplomats, and business leaders—aims to showcase the richness of Dominican culture and strengthen bilateral ties.
