UN warns of rising U.S. deportations to Haiti

New York, (EFE).- María Isabel Salvador, the United Nations Special Representative for Haiti, expressed concern over potential increases in deportations of Haitians from the United States, particularly under policies influenced by the Trump administration. Speaking from UN headquarters in New York, Salvador emphasized that human rights must remain a top priority, warning that deported individuals risk returning to extremely unsafe and unstable conditions.

With over 700,000 Haitians living in the U.S.—mainly in Florida and parts of Massachusetts—there are growing fears within the community. Past anti-immigrant rhetoric, such as unfounded claims made by Donald Trump in Springfield, Massachusetts, has fueled stigma and anxiety.

Haiti continues to face a deepening humanitarian and security crisis, worsened since early 2023. Salvador also noted the possibility that the U.S. may designate Haitian gangs as foreign terrorist organizations, a move already made against several Mexican and Latin American groups.
