Judge wants to wear us down, lawyer in landmark suit says

SANTO DOMINGO. – The attorney in the dragged out and milestone lawsuit against the builders of the high rise Torre de Plata in the upscale sector Los Cacicazgos affirmed Tuesday that the Administrative Court judge which hears the case has again postponed the hearing, “to lower the spirits” of the residents who complained that the structure is being built illegally.

The high rise under construction next to the hotel Dominican Fiesta is now a hulk which has weathered more than two years since the Los Cacicazgos Neighborhood Board filed the suit, but still the judge Judith Contreras postponed today’s hearing and scheduled the next one for January 24.

The continuance as granted after defense lawyers claimed that the witness Luis Omar Rancier failed to appear to today’s hearing, with the necessary documentation.

But plaintiff attorney Miryam Paulino, who affirmed that Los Cacicazgos’ residents hope that a conclusion is reached as soon a possible, slammed judge Contreras for having postponed every hearing since September, “in an effort to lower the spirits of the residents.”
