Indrhi says dam flows increase due to storm rains

Santo Domingo – The reservoirs of the country’s dams have received significant water contributions due to the recent rains recorded in almost the entire national territory, the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indrhi) reported yesterday.

In addition, the agency urged the population to remain attentive to the reports of the emergency agencies that are in permanent session, notifying the increases in river flows.

He said that in his recent report on the volume of water in the country’s main dams, from April 15 to date, the reservoirs have received 267.02 million cubic meters (MMC) of water, a product of troughs.

He indicated that the complex of reservoirs in the upper basin of the Nizao River (Jigüey, Aguacate, and Valdesia-Las Barías) recovered since it had not received contributions from the rains recorded in a large part of the country.

As a result of the increase in the flow of the Nizao River, Valdesia has a volume of 100.95 million MMC, 77.5% of its capacity, rising to the level of 146 meters above sea level (masl), with the maximum level being 150 meters above sea level; while the Jigüey dam has 109.05 MMC, 85.7% of its total volume, so it is located at 537.30 meters above sea level, with a maximum level of 541 meters above sea level.

Since last week, the flow of the Yuna River and its tributaries has increased, causing the Hatillo and Rincón dams to spill, which reached maximum levels due to the contributions of rains received from the central mountain range.

According to Indrhi, the rainfall has also favored the Sabana Yegua and Sabaneta dams, which currently exhibit 388.66 meters above sea level and 632.26 meters above sea level, respectively, and the region has adequate humidity.

He said that the agency’s mission in the integrated management of water resources is to preserve the liquid in the water infrastructures to guarantee adequate supply in the face of future droughts.
