Abinader leads first phase of Santiago Monorail testing

Santiago, DR.- President Luis Abinader recently inaugurated the Santiago Monorail’s first passenger trip, marking a historic milestone in transportation for the Dominican Republic, Central America, and the Caribbean. This event is the first of its kind for a monorail in the region.

President Abinader personally operated the train, traveling with four cars from Station 3 in Ensanche Espaillat to Station 2 in San Lorenzo, covering approximately 2 kilometers at a test speed of about 15 kilometers per hour.

Dynamic system testing without passengers started in May with the arrival of the first trains.

FITRAM reported that the project is on track, with 2,845 piles and 449 piers completed out of the total required. Additionally, 9.8 kilometers of beams have been manufactured, and 5.1 kilometers have been installed. Work is ongoing on 13 of the 14 planned stations, with construction of the Monumental Station scheduled to begin in September.
