Abinader confident Haiti Security Mission will succeed with full deployment
Santo Domingo.- Dominican President Luis Abinader expressed confidence in the success of the Multinational Security Mission (MMS) in Haiti, provided that the promised deployment of 2,500 agents and adequate funding are fulfilled. During a press conference at the National Palace, Abinader noted that only 400 of the planned 2,000 agents are currently operating, falling short of the mission’s objectives. He emphasized that proper implementation is key to restoring peace in Haiti.
The MMS, approved by the UN Security Council in October, was established at Haiti’s request to address escalating violence from armed gangs, which control 85% of Port-au-Prince and other areas. While Kenya leads the mission and has pledged additional forces by January 2025, deployment delays persist. Kenyan President William Ruto highlighted ongoing financial and logistical support from nations like the U.S. and Canada, expressing gratitude for their contributions.
Haiti faces a profound crisis, with 5.4 million people experiencing acute hunger and widespread violence claiming over 4,500 lives in 2023 alone. The Dominican Republic, sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, continues to strengthen its border through a fence and deportation measures while closely monitoring the deteriorating situation in its neighbor.
