Max Puig urges middle-income nations to strengthen climate action

Havana, Cuba.- Speaking at the Sixth International Conference for World Balance in Havana, Max Puig, executive vice president of the National Council for Climate Change, emphasized the need for middle-income countries, including the Dominican Republic, to strengthen their climate policies. He highlighted that the worsening climate crisis and shifting geopolitical dynamics require greater commitment to environmental action.

Puig pointed to ongoing global debates on climate policy, particularly between proponents of sustainable development, such as the European Green Deal, and climate change denial seen in the U.S. He also stressed the growing influence of BRICS nations, noting that their commitment to ambitious climate policies could reshape global dynamics.

Looking ahead to COP30 in Brazil this November, Puig called for the Dominican Republic to take a leadership role, leveraging its position as both a Latin American nation and an Island Developing State. He underscored the country’s ability to mediate between different negotiating groups and promote regional cooperation to achieve meaningful climate progress.
