No parking on Las Damas street starting May 1
Santo Domingo.- Beginning May 1, 2025, parking will be permanently prohibited on Las Damas Street in the Colonial City, according to an announcement from the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant). The move aims to enhance mobility, improve pedestrian safety, and help preserve the historic urban setting.
The ban will be in effect 24/7, with no time-based exceptions. Vehicles parked in violation of the rule will be subject to fines and towing. Intrant also clarified that existing parking bays will be designated exclusively for short-term functions such as passenger drop-off and loading or unloading, not for long-term parking.
Authorities are urging residents, businesses, and institutions in the area to respect the new regulation in order to support a more organized and pedestrian-friendly environment in the Colonial City.

They want to “help preserve the historic urban setting.” That is… to provide visitors the ability to help them visualize the settings as they may have been back hundreds of years. This is a good draw for tourism. There is no information for alternative parking locations from Intrant. Visitors are left to their own devices.
There is plenty of parking in and around the Zona Colonial. Eliminating ~20 spaces will not make a material impact, but it will make the street much more pedestrian / tourist friendly. This is likely being done in anticipation of the new cruise terminal being built to accommodate larger ships, which will increase pedestrian traffic dramatically.
