Puerto Plata residents demand end to violence linked to Haitians

Estero Hondo, Puerto Plata.- Dressed in black and carrying flags and photos of victims, residents of Estero Hondo in Villa Isabela, Puerto Plata, held a march on Sunday to protest the illegal trafficking of Haitians and alleged military complicity in the region. The demonstration took place under the slogan “Enough is enough, not one more death,” calling for increased security in the tourist area.

The protest was organized by professionals from Estero Hondo based in Santiago, along with local business, political, and community groups. The Dominican Army and National Police provided security to prevent possible clashes between Dominicans and Haitians in the area.

The march comes in response to the killing of rancher Bienvenido Acosta, the fifth such incident in two years allegedly involving Haitian nationals. Protesters also recalled other violent events, including the murders of Juan José Soto (uncle of former official Soto Jiménez), two others, and a German couple found in a cistern.
