European Union presents award to Civil Defense at Open Day

Santo Domingo.- The European Union Delegation in the Dominican Republic opened its doors on Saturday, May 10, 2025, allowing the public to learn about the functions and projects carried out by this diplomatic body.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 1,500 visitors toured the facilities, interacted with diplomats from the member states present in the country, and engaged with the heads of each department within the delegation.

During the event, the European Union Ambassador presented an award to the Civil Defense for its tireless efforts and selfless commitment to protecting and saving lives.

Ambassador Afheldt highlighted the work of the Civil Defense during the recent Jet Set tragedy, stating, “On behalf of the European Union, I have the great honor of presenting an award to an institution that represents the best of the human spirit: the Dominican Civil Defense. This recognition is for every volunteer, every operational member, every person who has put their life at the service of others without asking for anything in return. It is for you, the unsung heroes who wear orange and, regardless of the danger, always respond to the call of duty.”

Participants learned about cooperation projects and enjoyed a variety of European cuisine throughout the day, while children enjoyed storytelling and participated in activities using recycled materials.
