Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Academy of History (ADH) and the General Archive of the Nation will present the new book Social History of the Haitian Domination, 1822–1844, by writer and professor Olivier Batista Lemaire this Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The launch event will take place in the auditorium of the General Archive of the Nation, where the book will be introduced as a significant new contribution to the understanding of the complex historical relationship between the two republics that share the island of Hispaniola.
According to a statement from the ADH, Professor Batista explores the Haitian invasions of Dominican territory across nine chapters, profiling key Haitian leaders, their methods and ambitions, as well as the various forms of resistance and protest mounted by the Hispano-Dominican population in defense of their cultural identity.
Among the book’s major themes are the reach of Haitian military power, the social relegation of Hispano-Dominicans, the role of the Hispano-Dominican civil elite, subservient social roles, and protest exile. The work also addresses the abolition of slavery, land expropriation laws, popular resistance, and the controversial land redistribution enacted by President Boyer.

Talking about fueling the anti Haitian sentiment
Writing about HISTORY is anti-Haitian?? Maybe they shouldn’t have invaded us and ruled for 22 years, so that this history couldn’t be written. Also, if possible, help stop the passive invasion NOW so we don’t have another book about it later since it offends you so much.
History is History. Can’t say it’s fueling an anti-Haitian sentiment if it happened. It’s part of the country’s history so why not read/ talk about it?
Just reminding people of the history between two VERY DISTINCT countries and the atrocities they committed against us early on. We are not brothers and sisters, we are mere accidental neighbors. This was our island until france started meddling here.
Seal the border and send them back. I would love to see that book!
Best to translate the book to English for international readers.
