Hurricane season starts tomorrow with high average

Tomorrow, June 1, the 2025 Atlantic cyclone season officially begins, with an average forecast of 15 storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes, up from last year due to climate change that increases sea temperatures, as well as the La Niña phenomenon.

The Atlantic tropical cyclone season ends on November 30. The names of the possible storms by the National Hurricane Center are Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy.

As every year, Dominican authorities affirm that they are prepared in terms of prevention for the phenomena that could impact the country that has suffered heavy damage from hurricanes such as San Zeno in 1930, David in 1979, George in 1998, and Fiona in 2022.

In addition and perhaps with greater damage from heavy rains and flooding, storms Federico in 1979; Dean, Olga and Noel in August, October and December 2007 caused a great deal of loss of life and property damage that greatly affected the country….

Other more recent damages, although not due to storms, were the floods caused by heavy rains in November 2022 and 2023 that left more than 40 deaths, most of them in Santo Domingo.
