Saharan dust to haze skies and raise heat index across the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Meteorological Institute (INDOMET) announced that Saharan dust concentrations are expected to increase starting this Monday, causing hazier skies and contributing to a higher thermal sensation, especially when combined with warm east/southeast winds.
While a strong anticyclonic system will continue to suppress widespread rainfall, brief showers are expected during the early morning in coastal areas such as Barahona, Peravia, San Cristóbal, and Santo Domingo. Additional localized showers, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, are forecast for the afternoon in the northwest regions of Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Montecristi, and Valverde.
Due to high temperatures caused by Saharan dust, warm winds, and prolonged sun exposure, INDOMET urges the public to stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, seek cool, ventilated areas, and avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Special precautions should be taken for children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
