Abinader: decision on Venezuela flights coming soon

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that the Dominican government is reviewing Venezuela’s request to restore direct commercial flights between the two countries, which have been suspended since July 2024 due to diplomatic tensions.

Speaking at La Semanal con la Prensa, Abinader explained that the evaluation is being conducted by the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) in coordination with the Foreign Ministry and aviation authorities. He described the process as both technical and strategic, involving considerations such as security, diplomatic relations, and bilateral agreements.

The president acknowledged the need for this air connection, highlighting its significance for both Venezuelans in the Dominican Republic and Dominicans living in Venezuela, who have had to travel via indirect routes through countries like Panama and Colombia. He emphasized that while Venezuela has already shown interest in resuming flights, the Dominican Republic has not yet reached a final decision. A formal response is expected in the coming days following the completion of technical assessments.
