Punta Cana.- Community groups and concerned citizens have accused the Sirenis Hotel and the Matute Hotel Group of destroying sea turtle nesting sites in Uvero Alto, Punta Cana. According to reports, sargassum is being removed from the beach using heavy machinery like bulldozers, allegedly without proper authorization from the Ministry of the Environment. This activity has caused serious harm to the coastal ecosystem, including the crushing of sea turtle eggs—particularly those of the endangered hawksbill turtle.
In addition, a cyclone fence has been installed along the shoreline to block incoming sargassum, which critics say threatens marine life and could pose safety risks to swimmers. Over time, the fence may also contribute to pollution due to corrosion.
Local organizations are demanding an immediate halt to these environmentally harmful practices and urging authorities to enforce conservation measures to protect the region’s fragile marine biodiversity, according to N Digital.
