Abinader: biodiversity is key to security, health, and prosperity

Guyana.- President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic stressed that biodiversity is essential for food security, health, and economic stability—not a luxury or abstract concern. Speaking at the Global Partnership for Biodiversity Summit in Guyana, he described its protection as an ethical duty and a condition for global peace and prosperity. He urged that the summit become a platform for real, measurable, and well-funded solutions, with fair consideration for developing nations, particularly small island states.

Highlighting the Dominican Republic’s commitment, Abinader detailed the country’s integration of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into its National Strategy for 2025–2035. He emphasized concrete actions such as expanding protected marine areas, including the newly declared Orlando Jorge Mera Marine Sanctuary, and pledged to meet the global target of 30% terrestrial and marine protection by 2030. Efforts are also underway to restore vital ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs while strengthening local bioeconomies and focusing on inclusive, community-centered development.

The president also raised the alarm on the growing threat of sargassum, which harms marine ecosystems, tourism, and fisheries. He proposed it be recognized as a regional priority and called for joint scientific, technical, and financial collaboration to turn the issue into a sustainable opportunity.
