Rosa Ng denounces institutional pressure against Chinese businesses
Santo Domingo.- Rosa Ng, community leader and former Dominican trade representative in China, denounced what she described as a climate of uncertainty and institutional harassment against the Chinese community in the Dominican Republic. She claims that state entities have been carrying out massive closures of businesses owned by Chinese citizens, creating a hostile environment for Asian investors.
In an interview on Propuesta de la Noche, Ng stated that Chinese merchants are facing simultaneous actions from agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service, Customs, Housing Ministry, Pro Consumidor, Public Health, and Immigration. She criticized the practice of shutting down businesses without prior notice or time to correct alleged irregularities, pointing out that many affected companies have operated legally for years and provide employment to hundreds of workers.
Ng, one of the founders of Santo Domingo’s Chinatown, warned of the severe economic and social impact of these closures, which she says threaten to bankrupt businesses and leave employees without income. She also lamented the neglect of Chinatown, once envisioned as a hub for cultural and economic exchange, but now affected by vandalism and lack of institutional support. She noted that the Chinese Embassy has expressed concern and engaged diplomatically with Dominican authorities.

“many affected companies have operated legally for years and provide employment to hundreds of workers”….By “workers” you mean illegal migrants? Walk into any Chinese store and I guarantee a good portion, if not most, of the employees are undocumented foreigners (mainly Haitian). Chinese business owners love to hire illegals so they can exploit them and pay them crappy wages, let’s be real.
I agree, the Chinese businesses don’t hire people that can legally work in the country., plus they avoid paying taxes as much as they can.
Illegal aliens are hired by Dominicans in much larger numbers…
