Abinader appeals to Russia and China for support in Haiti crisis response

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has sent separate letters to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, seeking their support for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, recently approved by the UN Security Council.

In his letter to Putin, Abinader appealed for Russia’s backing to strengthen the mission with the capabilities and mandates needed to dismantle criminal groups. In his message to Xi, he emphasized the importance of China’s “valuable support” to advance the initiative.

Abinader warned that Haiti’s deepening crisis is spilling across its borders, directly threatening Dominican national security and regional peace. He stressed that the resolution aims to empower the MSS to confront armed gangs, restore public order, and set the stage for sustainable peace and democratic governance under Haitian leadership.

The resolution, introduced by the United States and Panama, was approved on Tuesday with 12 votes in favor and three abstentions, establishing a new international force to combat gang violence in Haiti.
