US Embassy helps with agro emergencies, fight the fruit fly
Santo Domingo.- The US Embassy will host a workshop as oftoday Tuesday through Friday at Punta Cana, on the use of the Incident CommandSystem (ICS), to eradicate the fruit fly (Medfly) in country.
Experts from the US Forest Service and the US AgricultureDept’s. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will head the workshop which includesprocedures to select and temporarily manage control resources, personnel,infrastructure, equipment and communications, and assign staff according topreviously agreed standards and procedures.
In a statement, the US Embassy said over 40 participantsfrom the Agriculture, Defense and Environment ministries, Civil Defense, the EmergencyOperations Center, Haiti’s Agriculture Ministry, among other agencies will betrained on how to monitor and eradicate the fruit fly during the three-dayworkshop.
“A second follow-up workshop is planned in the comingmonths and this will include the development of a detailed action planapplicable to any agricultural emergency occurring in the Dominican Republic,”the statement adds.
