Experts agree: political leaders have sequestered their parties

Santo Domingo.- The vice president of the think tank Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) on Wed. said the disagreement over the political parties Law isn’t about  open or closed primaries, but the fact that all the proposals contain the “alternability” as a response, as  party elders refuse to yield their posts.

Servio Tulio Castaños made the statement in the lecture Security and Justice Roundtable, hosed by Finjus, where the jurists Manuel Ulises Bonelly, Ricardo Rojas León and the economist Ernesto Selman agreed that there’s no democracy in political parties and that their leadership have sequestered those organizations because of an institutional weakness.

Although they disagree over open or closed primaries, they do agree that the emphasis must be on their internal democratization and their processes.

During the activity the panelists also discussed the importance of a tax transparency law and a new Penal Code, which Congress recently failed to pass.
